Salem County Multi-Jurisdictional Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan

Have you experienced a loss from a natural hazard?  Are you interested in learning more about risks our community faces from natural hazards and what can be done about it?

Hazard mitigation is defined as sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risks to life and property from natural hazards such as flooding, high winds, winter storms and wildfires.  Hazard mitigation planning is the process through which communities identify the risks they face and develop strategies to implement hazard mitigation measures.

Our community has a current hazard mitigation plan (HMP) that was completed in 2016 along with the other municipalities in Salem County.  An updated of this hazard mitigation plan is underway to meet federal requirements and help substantially reduce the risk of injury, death, property loss and economic disruption from natural disasters.

The participation of concerned citizens will be important to the success of the hazard mitigation plan update.  Hazard mitigation is most effective when local governments work with residents, property owners and business interests to identify and understand risks and focus public and private resources on realistic solutions to problems.

Emergency Management is responsible for the Township’s all-hazard Emergency Operations Plan.  The plan outlines how Oldmans Township will function during emergency or disaster conditions.  The office assists organizations with their emergency plans and seeks to educate the public about the value of emergency preparedness.

Preparing Makes Sense

The likelihood that you and your family will survive a house fire depends as much on having a working smoke detector and an exit strategy as much as a well-trained fire department.  The same is true for surviving a hurricane or other emergency.  We must have the tools and plans in place to make it on our own at least for a period of time, no matter where we are when a disaster strikes.

Emergency Supplies Kit

Be prepared to improvise and use what you have on hand to make it on your own for at least three days.  What you have on hand when disaster strikes makes a big difference.  Consider two kits.  In one, put everything you will need to use where you are and make it on your own.  The other should be a lightweight, smaller version you can take with you if you have to get away.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Family Communications Plan – Your family may  not be together when disaster strikes, so plan on how you will contact one another and review what you will do in different situations.  Consider a plan where each family members calls or e-mails the same relative in the event of an emergency.  Choose an out of town contact and be sure everyone knows the phone number and e-mail address.

  • Establish a Meeting Place – Plan in advance how you will assemble your family and where you will go.  Establish a meeting place away from your home in case your home is affected by the disaster or in an area that is being evacuated.  The meeting point might be the home of a family member in another city, or a hotel, or landmark known to all family members.
  • Create a Plan to Get Away – Plan in advance where you will go an dhow you get there.  Choose several destinations, travel routes and modes of transportation so you have options in an emergency.  Take your emergency supply kit with you.
  • Know Emergency Plans at Work and School – Talk to your children’s schools and your employer about emergency plans.  Find out how they will communicate with families in times of emergency.  Make sure your school and employer has updated emergency contact information.
  • Make Arrangements for Pets – If you must evacuate, take your pets with you if possible.  It is important to understand that animals are not allowed inside Red Cross shelters.  Plan in advance for shelter alternatives that will work for both you and your pets.  Develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends and relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so.  Remember to carry pets in a sturdy container.  Bring identification, collar, leash and proof of vaccination.  Bring food and water for your pets.  Carry a current photo of your pets in case they get lost.
  • Buy a Generator – Residents who use a life support system should consider purchasing a small generator for their homes.  There are not enough generators available through local businesses and rental facilities to handle everyone’s needs during a major power outage.  Generators are also a good idea for residents without special needs.  They can be used to power lamps and refrigerators during prolonged periods without power.
